What was your first time like?

"Your first time shouldn't be with just anybody. You want to do it with a great guy."

These are the opening lines of a new video released in support of President Barack Obama. CNN posted an article and the video on October 25, not long after the video was posted. Lena Dunham stars in the video that compares to losing her virginity to her first time voting. Conservatives from across the nation expressed alarm at the campaign video. Many Republicans said it was "a step into the gutter for the incumbent Democrat" and was an insult to women.

When I first saw this video, I literally laughed out loud. I thought it was funny, clever and very different. It wasn't the usual political campaign commercial that bashed the other candidate, skewed the facts or took a message out of context. It was one young woman, making an honest comparison. At the end, there was simply an "Obama fro America" message. Simple, to the point and something totally different.

I know there are a lot of people out there who do not think that this video is appropriate. Other people think that the video is ingenious and different. I believe that Lena Dunham and the Obama team did a great job with this video. It compares voting to something that a good amount of people go through. The video is easy to relate to and is put into simple terms to help the viewer understand. The CNN article says that Dunham has her own show on HBO, and certainly doesn't shy away from uncomfortable topics. She plays the part in the video expertly and gets her message across very well. I'm not sure how much the Obama team was involved in the creation of this video, but the video has definitely made an impact. This video has created buzz around Obama and his campaign. Whether it's positive or negative buzz, Obama is still being talked about which increases his exposure as election day draws near.

  1. I thought this video was pretty funny. I feel like no matter who I'm voting for this year it's just nice to see a funny, eye catching ad. I'm tired of hearing the candidates bash each other and it was nice to laugh a little for a change.
