Saturday: A Day to Study?

I don't like to study. I really don't like to write papers and most of the time I wait until the last minute. However, this senior year has been polar opposite of my other three years here at ONU. I've actually been studying. I've written more than I ever imagined I would and I've been doing my best to get things done ahead of time. I have spent more time in the library this year than I have my other three years combined. I go to the library because if I stay in my room or apartment, there are way to many distractions. At the library, I'm stuck with nothing but my homework and some chocolate kisses I take with me (which I finished off yesterday). I know my fellow blogger, Katie Jones, can sympathize with me when I say that this year has not gone according to plan. I can usually handle whatever professors throw at me, but this semester's workload alone has been a ridiculous amount. On the positive side, I keep reminding myself that after December 14, I'm halfway done!

Okay, so why am I ranting about my difficult senior year? This weekend, I devoted the entire weekend to homework. It is not something I typically do and it's definitely something I don't really like doing. My Saturday was wide open. Not a single commitment, except the library and me. I got to the library a little after 10 a.m., took a lunch break around 3 p.m. and headed back around 4:30 p.m. I was able to accomplish a lot of work, but it still wasn't enough to scratch the surface. At 5:45, the library turned out the lights and turned them back off again. Since I've spent long hours at the library this year, I understand that this means they are closing down. I looked at the clock and was so surprised! I was expecting to be there until at least 10 p.m.! I checked the library's website to see what their hours were and low and behold it was 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. I checked the law library's hours, too. The law students are on fall break so they also closed at 6 p.m. I wasn't sure where I should go. I knew I wouldn't get any work done at my apartment. So I headed to my other home, Dicke College.

As I approached Dicke, I saw one person inside. I tried to open the doors, but the doors were locked. I was so frustrated. The person came to let me in, and I was able to work there until 8:30 p.m. before I got bored and hungry. All the while, security would came in to check on us a few times. My question to the university is, "Where is a person supposed to study, uninterrupted, here on campus?" I like to study in peace and quiet, without having to move every few hours to a new location. Do you have any great studying spots that you would like to share?

  1. I'm right there with you Melissa! Why is that our last year of college is proving to be the most challenging? I was hoping that it would be similar to senior year of high school where you could just coast through... not so much! Even though I want to pull hair out most of the time, I just have to remember, "don't stop, don't give up!" Hang in there, the light is at the end of the tunnel!

  2. I think a great place to study would be in the law library--WHEN IT IS open. It is very quiet and normally quite peaceful. It is open a little longer than the actual library so that is a plus. However, you do get kicked out around 1 a.m. You could also try the PAC LAB, although, I find that to be distracting with the computers everywhere. Maybe if you worked at the desk in the front of the room (away from the computer) that would be easier!

Studying is hard for me no matter where I go. Hang in there! You are almost half-way done!

  3. I always run into this problem. It's crazy to me that there isn't a good study spot open 24 hours on a college campus. I have a lot of pharmacy friends and the pharmacy building is open all the time. They lock the doors at midnight but you can stay. If you go in a classroom it's quiet enough to study. I actually like it better than the library because there is more room to spread out. They might have weekend hours, but I'm not sure. But during the week it's a great spot!
